IIT JAM
Exam Overview
The Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) is a prestigious exam that enables undergraduate science students to pursue advanced degrees at premier institutes. With a JAM score, candidates can enrol in the following programs: M.Sc., M.Sc. (Tech.), MS (Research), and M.Sc.-M.Tech. Dual Degree, Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., and M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree. The exam covers seven subjects: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics, and Physics.
Exam pattern
The candidates will be asked 60 multiple-choice questions, to be attempted within a total time duration of 3 hours. The maximum mark for the exam is 100. The question paper is divided into three sections as follows:
- Section A: This section consists of 30 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), where each question has four choices, with only one correct answer. 10 MCQs carry 1 mark each, while 20 MCQs carry 2 marks each. There will be a negative marking for this section. 1/3 marks and 2/3 marks will be deducted for each incorrectly answered MCQ of 1 mark and 2 marks respectively.
- Section B: This section consists of 10 Multiple-Select Questions (MSQs), each with four choices, one or more of which may be correct. Each MSQ carries 2 marks, and there is no negative marking in this section.
- Section C: This section consists of Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions. No choices are provided; instead, candidates must enter a signed real number using the virtual numeric keypad displayed on the computer screen. 10 NATs carry 1 mark each, while another 10 NATs carry 2 marks each. There is no negative marking for NATs.
